Participants in the Slow Performance Lab, 2025

It is finally upon us! After six years of steady PhD-ing, my oral defense will be taking place on November 24, 2026. A performance event guided by the inventiveness of research-creation, I will discuss my doctoral dissertation, Modelling Rest, Cuing Recovery: Reimagining Performance Art and Pedagogy for a Post-COVID Context. Investigating the pedagogical (and revolutionary) role of rest, slowness, idleness, and refusal within contemporary artists’ works (specifically those working in time-based processes), in parallel I also consider the social justice implications of integrating rest in the post-secondary studio art classroom.

Providing an expanded lens through which to challenge the pervasiveness of toxic productivity and disrupt conventional understandings of how/where research happens and what comprises knowledge/ways of knowing, I’m proposing the oral defense as a performative encounter with scholarly research.
