As part of Montreal-based performance artist and doctoral candidate Katherine-Josée Gervais’ thesis exhibition (À la banalité du geste, nous tenterons de nous soustraire), she has created an evolving installation work deliberately impacted by the everyday, non-spectacular actions of 5 invited performance-makers. This “come as you are” invitation is a luxurious proposition for someone like myself, who thrives in the spontaneous connections that may occur within unpremeditated (mundane) actions. In questioning the relation of performance to the socio-political, Gervais is seeking to uncover whether the everyday action, framed through performance does become political, or politicized. Writes Gervais: “Ce projet découle d’une réflexion sur le corps, la stéréotypisation, l’art action et le politique. Il implique l’exposition d’individus-artistes, de sujets humains. En invitant des personnes de divers âges, formes et identités à s’exhiber en galerie, des agencements sont créés de façon à obtenir un échantillonnage soumis à autant de points de vue. Il s’agit véritablement d’un laboratoire de recherche qui vise à décortiquer la juxtaposition des individus-artistes selon une esthétique sémiotique avec, à la base, l’intuition d’une certaine identification politique.”
